Dogs and logs

This morning I asked my husband what he wanted for dinner. I named off 4 or 5 different kinds of meats and he said hot dogs. I said ok, but we do not have any buns so I think I will make pretzel dogs instead. He said ok. But when he walked in the door from work this evening he said, these don't look like hot dogs. LOL He had apparently forgotten what I had mentioned this morning. But I don't blame him, working outside in the 90 degree heat would fry my brain too.

Pretzel Dogs

Follow the soft pretzel recipe, but instead of shaping the dough into pretzels or stick simply flattened a piece of the dough and roll it around a hot dog. The overall cook time was about the same as the regular pretzels. These were very good, my husband and I both agreed that cooking the hot dogs inside the pretzel dough really kept all the juices in the hot dog.

Cheese Logs

(Sorry I have no pictures, the camera decided to eat these pictures for some unknown reason. But they were very good and the string cheese inside melted perfectly. In fact, they were so good my camera ate the pictures!! HAHA)

Again, follow the soft pretzel recipe. But instead of shaping into pretzels or sticks roll out a piece of dough and roll up a piece of string cheese into the middle. It is very important to seal all the seams very well otherwise the cheese will ooze out of them. The cook time on these is also the same as the pretzel recipe.

Awesome. My husband loves the pretzel dogs you can buy at the mall, and I am going to have to make these with the hotdogs I prefer him to eat. Thanks for sharing!

Amber, I love bagel dogs, and these look very similar, plus I have a hard time finding them here. I've never tried making soft pretzels before, so I'm excited to try your recipe.

One question though, your recipe call for 'active dry yeast' - I'm assuming this doesn't mean quick rise or rapid rise yeast? Do you know if the recipe will work with a quick rise yeast? I'm asking because that's what I have on hand right now.

I enjoy your blog - you've got very similar tastes to me, so I'm enjoying looking over your recipes for ideas to try.

Hi Erik,
What I use is actually the active dry yeast. But I would go ahead and try the quick rise if that is all that you have on hand. I do not think it would make a ton of difference. Come back and let me know how they turned out.

My husband would LOVE these! He constantly requests pigs-in-a-blanket. What a great (and more yummy) variation! Thanks for the great idea! Your blog looks great...keep those recipes comin! ;)

Well, Amber, I tried these today and they are great!

I did try the recipe with quick rise yeast. Since the quick rise yeast doesn't need the initial activation, it recommends mixing with the dry ingredients, then adding 120 to 130 degree F water and mixing. So, I mixed the yeast and brown sugar together before adding the water (same amount as the recipe 1 1/3C plus 1/8C), then followed the recipe from there.

I wasn't sure if I was supposed to do the water bath for the bagel dogs, so I tried it both ways - both tasted fine, but the ones with the water bath looked better - nice and golden brown.

I also tried some basic pretzels and the cheese sticks with some leftover cheddar. All of it turned out great.

Thanks for the great recipe and post on the dogs - I'll be using this many times in the future.

does it matter which brand of hot dogs you use? I saw on another web site to use Nathans skinless beef dogs, as all others would be yucky.

We've had these a couple of times and we all love them! My 6 year old loves to help make them.

We do cheese logs, dogs, and plain pretzels and they are all very tasty! Thanks for sharing the recipe!

This post is what officially made me love your blog! I am a full time student and I love to cook and just recently started baking. Sometimes when my schedule doesn't allow for cooking, like finals week, I need to make something quick. (I get sick of take out real fast). So I've been browsing your blog all night. Instead of studying, of course. And when I saw these I thought yep she has the same taste as me, as I made these for dinner just tonight. P.S. I too live in Indiana! Keep up the awesome posts.
