Wilton Wonderland

I have always wanted to take the Wilton cake decorating classes but never had any free weeknights to do it. Now that I am done with school and have a little spare time I decided that a nice graduation present to myself would be to take the classes. Last night was my first session of course 1. In class we learned about the 3 different consistencies of icing, how to properly assemble a pastry bag, how level a cake, how to fill and ice a cake to prepare it for decoration, and also how to color the icing.

After the class the instructor guided the students into the store (Hobby Lobby) to pick out some items that we would need for the rest of the classes. I bought a few things at the store and came home and combined it with the items that I already had. Here are most of the supplies that I have accumulated so far. :)

Course 1 book, 12 pack of icing colors, Tip# 789, Piping Gel, Flower nail, Clear vanilla flavoring, 8" X 3" round cake pan, Bake Easy non-stick spray, 4 pack of couplers, piping bag ties, cake leveler, 16" featherweight bag, and the 50 piece tool caddy decorator set that is packed full of tips and other necessary items.

I am extremely excited about these courses and I can not wait until next week when I get to start practicing the different design elements and decorate a cake with them. Check back weekly because I plan on posting weekly updates of my decorated cakes and maybe even some new cake recipes.

Ooooh...how fun! I've always wanted to take that class too. I'll have to settle on living vicariously through you for now. Take good notes for us!

Great! Glad you're doing this! I make my kids' b-day cakes and I've always wanted to take cake decorating classes and I watch them come and go without signing up cuz I'd always need to get a babysitter. I'll definitely be looking forward to weekly updates! Mentioning what you learned the first evening makes me REALLY want to take the classes now! :)

I took one of these classes years ago and learned SOOOOO much. I still use my kit. The designs knowledge come in very handy. As do the icing tips.

I hope that you really do enjoy the classes as much as I do! I just started Course 3 last night and I'm as excited about it as I was for the first 2 courses.

You will have a great time! I have taken 1 and 2 and am taking 3 and the fondant class in the fall! It is kind of costly, but I look at it as an investment because I always use my tips!! Can't wait to see what you produce!

Congratulations. I'm sure you will have a blast.
I have always wanted to take them but the nearest place is a tad over an hour away.
I have a hutch full of supplies with 47 cake pans on shelves in my laundry room. :)
You picked out great supplies.
Wish you lived closer, you could borrow some pans. :)
I'll be following your progress and OH I so love your blog. I'm a fellow bread baking idiot.
Have fun,
Susie

I've always wanted to take that class...and last year my schedule actually allowed me to sign up.
I went to the 1st class and was extremely disappointed that the instructor highly recommended to pick up a long list of supplies (which totaled almost $200!!!). She said these supplies weren't mandatory but just the "basic" supplies would be messy & difficult for a newbie.
Needless to say I didn't go to any more classes & lost my registration fee.
I am a home baker with 2 small kids and have had to rely on learning from the blogs I read(which I love) and trial & error.
I've seen the many successes of the "wilton" course from many blogs and wish my experience could have been better.
Can't wait to see your progress :)

I agree with the previous poster that the supplies can add up. I took the course about a year ago.

But, if you use the supplies regularly and amass your collections slowly, it's worth it.

Enjoy the course! Looking forward to seeing what you make.

Awesome! Glad you got around to taking the Wilton course. I took it a while ago and unfortunately haven't used my skills a whole lot. My preference is the baking portion. :) Have fun with it!
